American Heart Association Statement about ADHD and Sudden Cardiac Death

An April 2008 issue of the American Heart Association has recommended that we consider an EKG on all children on ADHD medications. This recommendation is not based on evidence of a higher incidence of concerns, but rather a recommendation by the panel who wrote the article and made the recommendations. We are reviewing the information at this time. It should be noted that 0.8 to 2 children and adolescents per 100,000 suffer from sudden cardiac death, usually due to an undetected heart condition. A review of the use of medications shows that the incidence of sudden cardiac death for children on these medications is NOT higher than the general population. Therefore, until we see more information, we are not generally recommending that all children get an EKG. We will notify you, by mail if we feel that this recommendation should be followed.
